Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi Wins Gold in Men’s 800 Metres Final
Kenyan athlete Emmanuel Wanyonyi has made history by winning the gold medal in the men’s 800 metres final at the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris. Wanyonyi claimed the title with a personal best time of 1:41.19, beating world champion Marco Arop of Canada and Algerian Djamel Sedjati.
In an emotional interview after the race, Wanyonyi credited his inspiration to former 800 metres champion David Rudisha, who told him that he must win a gold in the Olympics final. Wanyonyi revealed that Rudisha reminded him of Kenya’s successful streak in the event, saying, "I talked with (David) Rudisha yesterday and Rudisha told me ‘you’re supposed to defend this title because Kenyans (won) the event last time in Tokyo (Games). So, I feel it’s a lot of pressure for me so I thank God that I can get it."
Wanyonyi’s victory marks the fifth consecutive time a Kenyan has won the 800 meters gold at the Olympics, following Wilfred Bungei (2008), David Rudisha (2012, 2016), and Emmanuel Korir (2021).
Other athletes also enjoyed success on the final night of athletics at the Stade de France in Paris, with Masai Russell securing a win in the women’s 100m hurdles and Jakob Ingebrigtsen collecting his second Olympic gold in the men’s 5000m.
