Rivers State High Court Set to Deliver Judgement in APC Party Row
In a highly anticipated decision, a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, is scheduled to deliver its verdict on a lawsuit filed by elected officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State against the party’s national executive and the seven-member Caretaker Committee led by Tony Okocha. The judgement, originally reserved for a later date, is now set to be delivered virtually on Monday, August 12, 2024, at noon.
The case was brought by the state, local government, and ward executives of APC under the leadership of Emeka Beke, who were suspended by the national executive and replaced with a caretaker committee. Sam Etetegwung, representing the sacked state executive, alongside Banarth Ezemoye and Ezekiel Ubom, who represent the local government and ward executives, are seeking a judicial interpretation of the APC constitution and Nigerian law regarding their suspension and the subsequent inauguration of the caretaker committee.
Judge Justice Sika Aprioku listened to arguments and final written addresses from both parties during the last hearing before reserving the judgement for a later date. The presiding judge has now communicated a delivery date and has urged counsels to be punctual and is ensuring heightened security around the court. The awaited verdict is expected to bring much-needed clarity to the internal crisis that has rocked the APC in Rivers State.
