Post Malone Opens Up about Being Labelled a "Culture Vulture" in candid Interview
In an honest chat with Anthony Mason for CBS News Sunday Morning, Post Malone spoke candidly about his experiences facing criticism from being labelled a "culture vulture." The 29-year-old artist reflected on his initial feelings of rejection, particularly from the hip-hop community, after the success of his 2015 hit single "White Iverson."
"This past weekend (Aug. 11), he [Post Malone] spoke with Anthony Mason… about his career and how country music fans have embraced him while hip-hop fans initially rejected him. "It sucked," he [Post Malone] said of people writing him off as a "culture vulture" or "one-hit wonder… " I was a kid," he emphasized.
When Mason asked if the artist took his critics’ words to heart, Malone replied, "Absolutely. It’s hard not to." Despite facing harsh rejection, Posty remained resolute, pushing forward and making the music that resonated with his true fanbase. "It’s not for the people who hate you… It’s for the people who love you, and for yourself, you know what I mean?" he expressed sincerely.
The artist elaborated, "I responded to it [hatred] by drinking a lot. Yeah, I was miserable." Moreover, he revealed the significance of focusing on his music during this trying period, stating, "It’s for the people who love you and for yourself." This unwavering determination fueled his success, garnering an impressive array of smashes including "Congratulations" and the platinum-certified "Sunflower," and fully solidifying his transition into country and pop domains.
Luke Combs jumped at the chance to collaborate on Post Malone’s upcoming album "F-1 Trillion" and echoed, "Big times for country music!" According to Malone, being accepted warmly by country stars, such as Luke Combs, has served as validation of his journey thus far, in stark contrast to Hip-Hop fandom’s initial rejection. He countered that the true testimonial stems from the country artist community: "I disagree [Anthony Mason’s credit]. I think that’s a testament to them."
Undoubtedly, Post Malone continues to shine, using life lessons learnt from his experiences to champion individual success and self-actualization.
