Nigerian Singer Seun Kuti Blasts Government for Lack of Investment in Sports
Renowned Nigerian singer, Seun Kuti, has lashed out at the Nigerian government for not investing in sports, citing the country’s poor performance at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. In a viral video on social media, Kuti expressed his disappointment and frustration with the government’s lack of investment in sports that require equipment and infrastructure.
According to Kuti, Nigeria only participated in sporting events that don’t require investment, such as track and field events. He pointed out that the country’s athletes are unable to compete in sports that require specialized equipment, such as gymnastics, due to a lack of investment in these areas.
Kuti also highlighted the fact that Nigerians know and bet on various sports, but the government is not willing to invest in creating a good league and rewarding winners with significant prizes. He suggested that a minimum of $1 million per year would be needed to create a good league and gift winners $25 million.
The singer also expressed his disappointment that Nigerians are unable to enjoy their children’s talents, as many of the country’s big superstars play in other countries. He referenced the example of Simone Biles, a gymnast who has achieved great success, and wondered how many talents are wasting away due to a lack of investment in gymnastics and training.
The video has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many Nigerians expressing their agreement with Kuti’s sentiments and calling for the government to take action to improve the country’s sports infrastructure and investment.
