“Nigerian Pastor’s ‘Anti-Witch’ Programme Sparks Outrage”
A controversial programme, themed “That Witch Must Die”, is set to take place on August 30 at the premises of the Mercy and Power Deliverance Ministry in Mbieri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. The event, organized by Pastor Angel Uzoma, has sparked outrage among human rights groups, who claim it will lead to witch hunts and violence against suspected witches in the state.
The Advocacy for Alleged Witches, a group that advocates for the rights of alleged witches, has called on the Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service (SSS) to stop the programme. The group’s director, Leo Igwe, said in a statement that the event will instigate and provoke witch hunts in the state, leading to hatred and violence against suspected witches.
Igwe stressed that witchcraft accusation is a form of death sentence, and alleged witches have been attacked, tortured, or killed in the past. He also argued that witch-hunting and persecution are not exercises of religious freedom, and that incitement of violence, hatred, and murder must be condemned.
The group has also urged the National Human Rights Commission and other agencies to stop the cleric and his ministry from holding the programme.
When contacted, Pastor Uzoma declined to comment, citing a counselling session with visitors. However, he insisted that he would not speak until the reporter visited his church’s office, despite being informed that the reporter is based outside the state.
The controversy surrounding the programme has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of alleged witches in Imo State. As the event approaches, human rights groups are urging authorities to take action to prevent violence and ensure the protection of all individuals, regardless of their perceived status as witches.
