Tied for Gold: United States and China Share Top Spot at 2024 Paris Olympics
The 2024 Paris Olympics have come to a thrilling close, with the United States and China both finishing with 40 gold medals. This marks the first time in Olympic history that two countries have tied for the most gold medals in a single Summer Olympics.
The competition was intense, with China taking an early lead with a gold medal in women’s weightlifting (+81kg) courtesy of Li Wenwen. The United States responded with a gold of its own in the women’s omnium title, defended by Jennifer Valente in cycling.
The Americans then secured their 40th gold in the last event of the Olympics, women’s basketball, where they had to overcome a 10-point second-half deficit to win their eighth consecutive Olympic gold.
The U.S. team’s success extended beyond the top tier of the podium, with a total of 126 medals won, the most for the Americans in the Summer Olympics since the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.
The next Summer Olympics will be hosted by Los Angeles in 2028.
