Breaking News: Anambra State to Hold Local Government Elections After Years of Delay
After months of anticipation, the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has finally announced its intention to conduct local government elections in the state. This move comes two years into the tenure of Governor Prof Chukwuma Soludo’s administration.
According to a press statement released on Monday, the election will take place on September 28, 2024. The statement, signed by ANSIEC Chairman Genevieve C. Osakwe, informed registered political parties and the general public of the impending election.
Soludo had earlier inaugurated the members of the ANSIEC, charging them to ensure a clean and credible poll. This development has been met with relief from various stakeholders, including civil society groups, politicians, and journalists, who had been calling for the governor to honour his promise to conduct the LG elections.
The commission has stated that election timetables, schedules of activities, and other details can be collected from the ANSIEC headquarters in Awka from August 14, 2024.
This announcement marks a significant step towards fulfilling the promise of democratic accountability and transparency in Anambra State. The conduct of the local government elections will give citizens a voice in the governance of their local communities and provide a platform for political parties to engage with the electorate.
With the election date now set, stakeholders in the state will be eagerly awaiting the campaigns and the voting process. The international community is also watching with interest, as the successful conduct of the elections will set a precedent for other states in Nigeria to follow suit.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
