Algerian Olympic Champions Return Home to Warm Welcome Amid International Backlash

Imane Khelif, the Algerian Olympic boxing champion, returned to her hometown of Algiers on Monday afternoon, met with a warm welcome by her fans and officials. Khelif’s homecoming comes amidst the intense scrutiny she faced during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games due to misconceptions about her gender.

Khelif, who won the gold medal in the women’s welterweight boxing category, was accompanied by other Olympic medalists, including gymnast Kaylia Nemour and runner Djamel Sedjati. The trio was greeted by Minister of Youth and Sports Abderrahmane Hammad, who expressed his congratulations on their impressive performances.

The champions’ scheduled meeting with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune later this week is expected to be a grand celebration, showcasing the country’s pride and admiration for its athletes.

Khelif’s victory was marred by controversy after Italian boxer Angela Carini withdrew from their match due to intense physical punishment and refusal to shake Khelif’s hand, sparking accusations of Khelif being a man. The backlash led to Khelif’s eligibility being questioned, with world leaders and celebrities chiming in.

However, Algerians vehemently defended Khelif, viewing the uninformed speculation as a form of racism. The country’s athletic community, government officials, and general public rallied around Khelif, publicly showcasing their support in Algiers and other cities.

The event’s broadcast in public squares across Algeria demonstrated the significance of Khelif’s victory, serving as a symbol of triumph and defiance in the face of adversity.

As Djamel Sedjati, the bronze medalist in the men’s 800 meters, highlighted, the success of women athletes like Nemour and Khelif will “give a boost to women’s sports in our country.”
