Bangladesh Court Launches Murder Investigation into Ousted Leader Sheikh Hasina
A dramatic development has unfolded in Bangladesh as a court opens a murder investigation into ousted ex-premier Sheikh Hasina, aged 76, and six top figures from her administration. The investigation follows the killing of a man during civil unrest in Dhaka last month.
Hasina fled Bangladesh by helicopter just a week ago, seeking refuge in neighboring India as protesters flooded the streets, marking the end of her iron-fisted tenure. The Dhaka Metropolitan Court has now ordered police to accept a murder case against the accused individuals, marking the beginning of a criminal investigation under Bangladeshi law.
According to Mamun Mia, a lawyer who brought the case on behalf of a private citizen, “A case has been filed against Sheikh Hasina and six more.” The accused individuals named in the case include Hasina’s former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Obaidul Quader, the general secretary of Hasina’s Awami League party, as well as four top police officers appointed by her government.
The four police officers, including former police inspector general Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, have since vacated their posts. Also named in the case are detective branch chief Harun-or-Rashid, and senior Dhaka Metropolitan Police officers Habibur Rahman and Biplob Kumar Sarker.
The investigation comes as a significant challenge to Hasina’s political legacy and poses a threat to her allies within the Awami League party. It remains to be seen how this development will affect the political landscape in Bangladesh and the future prospects of Hasina and her associates.
