TikTok Adds Group Chat Feature, Bringing More Social Options to Users

In a move to enhance user engagement and interaction, TikTok has introduced a new group chat feature, allowing users to converse with up to 32 people at a time. Announced on Monday, the feature lets users add friends or followers to a group chat, or invite mutual followed friends to join. However, users who have their TikTok settings set to block direct messages (DMs) will not receive invites to group chats.

To start a group chat, users can open their inbox on TikTok, press the “+” button to create a new chat, select the friends they want to add, and then hit “Select group chat.” Users can also change the name of the chat, add members, and even start a group chat by directly sharing a video, with the option to create a group chat appearing when selecting multiple people to share with.

In addition to the group chat feature, TikTok has also implemented limits on the number of groups someone can create and how many times messages can be forwarded. The company has also brought over muting and blocking tools, as well as the option to report harassment and abusive or hateful behavior.

Notably, the group chat feature is not available for users under the age of 15, who are the minimum age to use TikTok. Teens aged 16-17 have access restrictions, with TikTok stating that if a teen is sent a link to join a group conversation, they will not be able to join unless the group includes at least one mutual friend. Teens will also be required to review and approve new joiners when creating a group conversation.

In related news, TikTok has also announced the addition of stickers in DMs, allowing users to add a touch of fun to their group chats. This latest feature is part of a series of updates, including the TikTok Spotlight entertainment tool, more in-FYP ticketing, and AI-generated digital avatars. Despite these updates, the company is currently engaged in legal battles in the United States.
