Nigeria’s Council of State Meets Amidst Economic and Security Concerns
In a highly anticipated meeting, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is set to preside over the National Council of State at the Presidential Villa, just days after taking office. This is Tinubu’s first Council of State meeting since assuming the presidency, and it’s expected to be a critical discussion on the country’s economic and security concerns.
The meeting brings together all living former presidents and past heads of state, including former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, who were spotted attending the meeting in person. Abdulsalami Abubakar and former Head of State Yakubu Gowon joined virtually.
Sources within the presidency revealed that the meeting’s agenda includes discussing the fallouts of the recent #EndBadGovernance protests, which took place from August 1 and fizzled out after 10 days despite initial plans for a 10-day straight demonstration. The protests aimed to address perceived government mismanagement and corruption.
Apart from discussing the protests, serving ministers from the Tinubu administration are also set to make presentations to the Council. These include the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who will lead presentations on Food Security, State of the Economy, Road Construction, and Solid Minerals.
Other cabinet members expected to attend the meeting include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Head of Civil Service of the Federation, NSA, and the Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, among others.
The Council of State is a vital platform for Nigeria’s leaders to address pressing issues and forge a unified response to the country’s challenges. With President Tinubu at the helm, this meeting promises to be a significant step towards shaping the country’s future. More details are expected to emerge in the coming hours.
