African Union Declares Public Health Emergency Over Growing Mpox Outbreak

The African Union’s health watchdog has issued a dire warning, declaring a public health emergency over the rapidly spreading mpox outbreak on the continent. The declaration, made on Tuesday, comes as the outbreak continues to sweep through several African countries, particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mpox, a viral disease that is similar to monkeypox, has already affected thousands of people across Africa, causing widespread pain and suffering. According to the latest data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), there have been 38,465 cases of mpox and 1,456 deaths in Africa since January 2022.

“This declaration is not merely a formality, it is a clarion call to action,” said Jean Kaseya, head of the Africa CDC, during an online media briefing. “We must be proactive and aggressive in our efforts to contain and eliminate this threat.”

The outbreak has already crossed borders, affecting families and communities across the continent. Kaseya emphasized the urgent need for action, stating that the time for reaction is over and that it is crucial to take proactive measures to combat the spread of the disease.

The declaration of a public health emergency is a significant step in the fight against mpox, as it allows for increased coordination and cooperation among African countries to combat the outbreak. It also enables the mobilization of resources and expertise to support affected countries and communities.

As the situation continues to unfold, the African Union’s health watchdog will work closely with international partners to contain and eliminate the mpox outbreak.
