Ogun State House of Assembly Passes Resolution to Prosecute Olu of Obafemi for Land Grabbing
The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade, to prosecute the Olu of Obafemi, Oba Taofeek Kayode Owolabi, for alleged land grabbing. The resolution was passed on Tuesday, following the presentation of a report by the House Committees on Justice, Ethics and Public Petitions on a petition received from the Agboro Olatunde Community Development Association against the monarch.
According to the report, the monarch was accused of bringing in a developer to clear over 30 hectares of land belonging to the residents of Agboro-Olatunde Village, resulting in the destruction of cash crops worth millions of naira. The report also stated that the monarch did not have any registered or non-registered title documents on the disputed land, and his actions were contrary to the Anti-Land Grabbing Law, 2016 of Ogun State.
The Assembly also directed the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and the State Council of Obas to immediately suspend the monarch for perpetrating acts capable of disrupting the peace of the residents of Agboro-Olatunde village and the state at large.
The resolution was passed after a unanimous voice vote, with the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, moving the motion to convert the Committee’s recommendations into the House resolution, which was seconded by the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye.
The development is a major blow to the monarch, who is now facing the possibility of prosecution for his alleged role in the land grabbing saga. The decision is seen as a significant step towards upholding the law and protecting the rights of the residents of Agboro-Olatunde Village.
The incident highlights the importance of land ownership and the need for government agencies to take swift action to prevent land grabbing and ensure that the rights of citizens are protected.
