Mookie Betts Makes Triumphant Return to Dodgers Lineup
Mookie Betts, the eight-time All-Star, made a big impact in his return to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lineup on Monday, hitting a two-run home run off Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta in his second plate appearance. The 11-year veteran finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate with the home run, three RBI, one run scored, and one strikeout.
Betts’ return to the lineup was a welcome sight for the Dodgers, who had missed his presence since he went on the injured list due to a fractured left hand. The 29-year-old outfielder played 65 games at shortstop before his injury, but he has now moved back to his more familiar position in right field.
“I think it was kind of a mutual thing, but I would say I mostly went to them,” Betts said, via the Los Angeles Times’ Mike Digiovanna. “I said, ‘Listen, I believe I can do it, but I want to win, man. I want to win. And I don’t know if me [at shortstop] is the best solution.'”
Betts’ decision to move back to right field was likely influenced by the team’s performance this season. Jason Heyward has played the majority of the season in right field, but he has struggled at the plate, batting just.204 with a.665 OPS. Betts, on the other hand, has been excellent in right field, credited with 132 Defensive Runs Saved during his career and having earned six Gold Gloves for his play.
Additionally, Betts is giving up the leadoff spot in the batting order upon his return, ceding to Shohei Ohtani, who has compiled a slash line of.274/.383/.637 with 16 homers and 17 stolen bases at the top of the lineup.
The Dodgers won the game 5-2, with Betts’ home run being a key factor in the victory. His return to the lineup is a boost for the team, and he is expected to be a key contributor as they make a push for the playoffs.
