Operation to Rescue Children from Begging Syndicates Launched in Anambra State

The Anambra State Government has launched a major operation to rescue children from begging syndicates in Awka, the state capital. The operation, carried out by the Ministry of Women Affairs and the Awka Capital Development Authority (ACTDA), has resulted in the arrest of about 30 child beggars, as well as adults.

The flyover bridge at Aroma junction has long been a den of child beggars, who are used by syndicates to beg for alms. Residents of the area have complained that the children not only constitute an eyesore but also pose a nuisance, stealing from people and causing a rowdy atmosphere when charity organizations visit.

According to a resident, anytime a group of charity organizations comes to give out food, the children start causing a commotion and even steal phones and valuables from the organization members. A traffic warden in the area also expressed frustration, saying that the children climb the flyover and jump down from great heights, causing chaos and stealing from passersby and even themselves.

Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, explained that the operation is not aimed at making the children victims, but rather to use them to trace the syndicates that brought them to the streets to beg. She emphasized that Anambra State has a low number of out-of-school children and will not stand idly by while they are exploited by syndicates.

The operation will continue in all parts of Awka to rid the town of children being used by begging syndicates. The Anambra State Government is determined to take children off the streets and ensure that they are protected from exploitation.
