Nigeria: President Tinubu Assents to Judicial Office Holders Salaries and Allowances Bill
In a significant move, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has signed into law the Judicial Office Holders Salaries and Allowances Bill, 2024. The bill aims to improve the living conditions of judicial officers across the country, who have been on the same salary for nearly two decades.
According to a statement from the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the assent to the law is a historic moment that marks a significant step towards achieving a judicial system that serves the interests of all Nigerians. Fagbemi praised President Tinubu for his commitment to the sustainable reform of the administration of justice, describing the bill as a crucial component of that reform.
The law increases the annual earnings of key judicial officers, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) to N64 million, the President of the Court of Appeal to N62.4 million, and basic salaries for Chief Judges of Federal and State High Courts, as well as the President of the National Industrial Court, to N7.9 million annually.
Fagbemi expressed his appreciation to the 10th National Assembly for their swift passage of the bill, which follows a 300 per cent salary increase for judicial officers at both federal and state levels in June.
The government has pledged to work with justice sector stakeholders to address additional issues related to strengthening the judiciary in the future. The move is seen as a significant step towards improving the living conditions and attracting top talent to the judiciary in Nigeria.
