Thousands Evacuated as Ukraine Shells Kursk Region Bordering Ukraine

Mass Evacuation in Russia’s Kursk Region as Ukraine Attack Continues

Tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes in Russia’s Kursk region on the border with Ukraine, following a violent attack by Ukrainian soldiers a week ago. This is the largest attack on sovereign Russian territory since the conflict began over two years ago.

The residents of the affected areas were left with no choice but to leave everything behind as Ukrainian forces smashed through the frontier. “Helicopters and planes fly over the yard and shells were flying. What could we do? We left everything behind,” said evacuee Mikhail.

Those who have managed to escape are now being housed in temporary accommodation centers in the city and are receiving food and clothes. One evacuee described the devastating scenes they left behind, saying, “There is no light, no connection, no water. There is nothing. It’s as if everyone has flown to another planet, and you are left alone. And the birds stopped singing.”

The situation remains dire, with residents continuing to flee as Russian forces retaliate against Ukrainian troops with missiles, drones, and airstrikes. Russian authorities have declared a “federal-level” state of emergency in the regions of Kursk, Bryansk, and Belgorod, and are setting up 400 temporary accommodation centers across the country to receive the evacuees.

The attack has also left residents without basic amenities, with one person stating that there were no trade or shops working in their town, and no electricity. As the crisis unfolds, the Russian government is scrambling to provide aid to those affected, while international leaders are calling for a resolution to the conflict.
