COVID-19 Cases and Deaths Reach Alarming Milestones, WHO Reports
As of July 21, 2024, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that more than 775 million confirmed cases and over seven million deaths have been reported globally since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
According to a statement issued by WHO in Abuja, the number of new cases and deaths globally increased by 30% and 26%, respectively, over the past 28-day period. This is a significant rise from the previous 28-day period, which saw over 186,000 new cases reported across 96 countries, with 2,800 new fatalities reported in 35 countries.
The latest figures show that 46 countries and 35 countries provided data on COVID-19 hospitalisations and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, respectively. A total of over 23,000 new hospitalisations and more than 600 new ICU admissions were reported.
A closer look at the data reveals that countries reporting consistent data over the current and past reporting period saw an overall increase of 11% in new hospitalizations and 3% in new ICU admissions.
