Rwanda Cracks Down on Over 5,600 Churches, Citing Safety and Health Concerns

In a surprise move, the Rwandan government has shut down more than 5,600 churches, including 100 cave churches, for failing to comply with safety and health regulations. The crackdown, which began on July 29, is the largest of its kind since the law regulating places of worship was enacted in 2018.

According to the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB), the majority of the affected churches lacked basic infrastructure and proper hygiene and safety standards, while several others were operating illegally. RGB Chief Executive Usta Kaitesi emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring that places of worship operate in a safe and organized environment.

The law, which was passed in 2018, requires churches to have proper soundproofing, abolish the use of loud public address systems, and compel preachers to have theological training before opening a church. The goal is to ensure the safety and tranquility of worshipers.

The move has sparked controversy, with some critics arguing that the government is stifling religious freedom. However, President Paul Kagame has maintained that the country does not need a high number of churches, citing the need for more developed economies to sustain them.

The crackdown has also highlighted the proliferation of Pentecostal churches in Rwanda, which have become popular due to the performance of miracles and prophecies. While some of these churches are massive and attract large crowds, others are tiny structures that are poorly built without proper planning permission.

The Rwandan government’s decision to shut down the churches has been met with mixed reactions, with some welcoming the move as a step towards ensuring public safety and others criticizing it as an attack on religious freedom.
