AI-Powered PCs See Significant Growth in Q2 2024, Apple Leads the Way

In a recent report by market research firm Canalys, global shipments of artificial intelligence (AI) PCs have shown a significant increase in the second quarter of 2024. A total of 8.8 million AI-capable computers were shipped by device manufacturers, with Apple’s Mac computers accounting for the majority of these devices.

According to the report, Mac computers powered by Apple Silicon chipsets made up 60 percent of the AI PC shipments in Q2 2024, significantly higher than Windows AI computers, which made up just under 40 percent of shipments. Apple’s current-generation computers are all equipped with M-series chips, which provides them with a unique advantage in the AI PC market.

While Apple commanded the majority of shipments in the quarter gone by, Windows AI PC shipments showed impressive growth, increasing sequentially by a whopping 127 percent. Among OEMs in this segment, Lenovo’s Yoga Slim and ThinkPad laptops brought in a 6 percent market share, slightly lower than Dell’s 7 percent with its Inspiron, XPS, and Latitude models. HP also commanded an 8 percent market share following the launch of its EliteBook and Omnibook Copilot+ PCs.

The report notes that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series chipsets, which are based on Arm architecture and power Copilot+ PCs from a range of OEMs, were only launched in June, providing a limited window for OEMs to ship units in Q2 2024. However, these companies have committed to incorporating these Arm chipsets into upcoming products, promising higher performance and efficiency.

According to Canalys’ Principal Analyst Ishan Dutt, “With a strong foundation now set, AI-capable PC shipments are poised to gain further traction in the second half of 2024.” The growth of AI-powered PCs is expected to continue, driven by the increasing demand for devices that can take advantage of advanced AI capabilities.

As AI technology continues to evolve, it will be exciting to see how these advancements shape the future of computing.
