Real Sociedad have turned down Arsenal’s opening bid for midfielder Mikel Merino, according to Radio Marca. The 28-year-old, who has less than a year left on his contract, is eager to make the move to the Premier League.
Mikel Arteta is a strong supporter of Merino and wants him at Arsenal as soon as possible. Over the past few weeks, the Gunners have been in contact with both Real Sociedad and the player’s entourage. An agreement between Arsenal and Merino was reportedly reached over the weekend.
As negotiations continue, Noticias de Gipuzkoa reports that Arsenal’s initial offer of €30 million fell short of Real Sociedad’s asking price of €40 million. Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu Gasper, even travelled to Spain to reassure the player of their commitment to the transfer.
Mundo Deportivo echoes that talks between the two clubs have been active, and despite the valuation gap, it “seems inevitable” that the Euro 2024 winner will join Arsenal soon. Journalist Kike Marin also suggested it’s only a “matter of time” before the deal is finalized.
