Floods Ravage 27 States in Nigeria, Affecting 227,494 People and Damaging 32,837 Houses

Nigeria Grapples with Widespread Floods, 227,494 People Affected

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has announced that 27 states in Nigeria have been impacted by devastating floods, affecting over 227,494 people and damaging over 32,000 houses. The floods have also damaged 16,488 hectares of farmland, causing significant agricultural losses.

NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, warned that communities at risk of flooding and those living along waterways should relocate to safer areas ahead of the peak of the rainy season. She urged State Emergency Management Agencies and community leaders to be prepared for rapid flood response and reassured farmers that the temporary dry spell will end soon.

The agency has rapidly mobilised efforts to assess the damage caused by floods nationwide and is coordinating relief operations with various State Governments to provide succour to affected persons. NEMA has also commenced the deployment of relief items to complement the efforts of State Governments.

Flooding is a recurrent and severe issue in Nigeria, exacerbated by seasonal rains, poor drainage infrastructure, and deforestation. Climate change has intensified these challenges, leading to more frequent and severe flooding events. The consequences of flooding are far-reaching, affecting millions of people through displacement, damage to homes and infrastructure, and disruptions to agriculture and livelihoods.

Efforts to manage and mitigate flooding in Nigeria include improved infrastructure, early warning systems, and public awareness campaigns. The agency’s proactive stance and readiness to address the nationwide crisis highlight its commitment to coordinating and providing necessary support towards efficient disaster management across the country.
