Advocacy Group Hails Public Hearing on Gombe State Disability Protection Law

A landmark public hearing on the proposed Gombe State Disability Protection Law and Disability Commission has been praised by the Advocacy for Disability Act (ADAC) as a significant milestone towards inclusivity in the state. The advocacy group has commended the Gombe State House of Assembly for prioritizing a disability protection law and the establishment of a disability commission.

ADAC, a consortium of five civil society organizations, including the Joint Association of Persons with Disability (JONPWD) Gombe State Chapter, Gombe State Network of Civil Society (GONET) and Association of Non-Governmental Organization (ANGO), welcomed the public hearing as a step towards harnessing the people’s input for a people-oriented legislation.

The organizations, which include El-New Hope Foundation, Abia State; Global Youth Empowerment and Vulnerable Initiative, Adamawa State; Lawanti Development Community Foundation, Gombe State; Center for Peace Education and Community Development, Taraba State; and Inclusive Friends Association (IFA), Abuja, are eager to see the birth of an inclusive state.

According to ADAC Cluster Anchor and Executive Director, Grace Jerry, the group is waiting anxiously for the Governor, Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya, to sign the bill into law once the Assembly is done with the legislative process. Jerry praised the Governor’s efforts towards the disability community even in the absence of a disability law and reiterated the group’s commitment to providing necessary support for the empowerment and dreams of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the state.

The coalition has urged the State Assembly to continue with people-oriented legislative leadership, emphasizing the importance of inclusive legislation that will help harness the potential of the disability community in the state.

The group’s statement comes after a public hearing on the Gombe State Disability Law, which saw stakeholders gather to discuss the proposed bill and share their thoughts on how to improve its outcome.
