Nigerian Activist Calls for Scrutiny of State Governors Amid Economic Hardships
As Nigerians continue to struggle with economic hardships, a prominent activist and political analyst has urged citizens to direct their scrutiny and accountability demands towards their state governors, with the same fervor they apply to questioning national leaders.
Usman Okai Austin, a seasoned activist and analyst, emphasized the need for citizens to engage their governors on pressing issues affecting their states. In a statement, he highlighted the lack of transparency and accountability from many state governors, stating that if they are held accountable in the same manner as national leaders, governance at the state level could experience a significant change.
Okai commended President Bola Tinubu for making efforts to explain his policies and decisions, but lamented the evasive nature of state governors when it comes to discussing economic hardships and governance issues. He asked pointed questions about how funding is managed in each state, from federal allocations to internally generated revenue, as well as the state wage bill and income-expenditure management.
The activist drew a contrast between the financial entitlements of senators and the lack of transparency from state governors. While senators face scrutiny for earning significant sums, state governors are accused of misappropriating funds and denying rightful benefits to judges and staff. Okai urged governors to be more transparent with their constituents and open their state books for public scrutiny.
In his statement, Okai reminded citizens that it is their right and responsibility to ensure their leaders are working for them. He encouraged citizens to demand answers and hold their governors accountable for their actions and inactions, adding that it is time for governors to be held to the same standards as national leaders.
As Nigerians face continued economic struggles, Okai’s call to action has resonated with many who feel that their voices are not being heard by state governors. The activist’s plea for accountability and transparency has sparked a much-needed conversation about the role of governors in shaping the country’s future.
