ESPN Fires Robert Griffin III and Sam Ponder
In a surprise move, ESPN has let go of NFL analyst Robert Griffin III and “NFL Countdown” host Sam Ponder, according to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic. The decision is reportedly budget-related, with the network nearing the end of its fiscal year.
Griffin, who had two years left on his contract, joined ESPN in 2021 to work on its college football and NFL coverage. He had recently been replaced on “Monday Night Countdown” after the network hired the newly retired Jason Kelce.
Griffin addressed his dismissal on social media, saying he was thankful for many people who helped him during his time at ESPN. He also praised the behind-the-scenes staff, saying they are the “REAL MVPs” who sacrifice time with their families to ensure people like him have the opportunity to shine.
In his statement, Griffin thanked fans for their support, saying “none of this is possible without you guys.” He also expressed his commitment to seeking and defending the truth while telling athletes’ stories the right way.
Ponder was hired by ESPN in 2011 and took over as host of “NFL Countdown” in 2017. The network will pay out the remainder of Griffin’s salary, and it is unclear if more decisions will be made before the end of September.
Griffin’s departure from ESPN marks the end of an era for the former NFL quarterback, who had become a familiar face on the network’s college football and NFL coverage. Despite his dismissal, Griffin remains grateful for the opportunities he had at ESPN and is looking forward to what the future holds.
