Zamfara State Governor Emphasizes Importance of Federal College of Education in Reforming Education Sector

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has highlighted the critical role of the Federal College of Education, Technical (FCET), Gusau, in his administration’s quest to reform the education sector in the state. The governor made this statement during a courtesy visit from the governing council of FCET at the Government House Gusau on Wednesday.

According to the governor, the college is crucial to the declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector by his administration. He stated that the college has greatly benefited the people of Zamfara State, with five of his sisters having graduated from FCET.

The governor lamented that the state of education in Zamfara State has been at the bottom for many years, consistently vying with Yobe for the last position. However, he expressed optimism that the current efforts to reform the sector will yield positive results.

The governor declared a state of emergency in the educational sector of Zamfara last year due to its challenges. He revealed that the previous government failed to pay fees for the NECO and WAEC exams, but his administration has since settled the debt.

Mr Lawal emphasized that his administration is dedicated to ensuring every child has access to quality education. To achieve this, the state government is renovating and constructing over 290 schools throughout the state, providing suitable furniture, and offering continuous training to teachers.

The governor acknowledged the significant role FCET plays in enhancing the capacity and quality of teachers, and expressed his administration’s commitment to working in synergy with the college to revamp the educational system of Zamfara State.

In his remarks, the chairman of the council, Professor Muhammad Bashir-Nuhu, commended the governor for prioritizing education in his administration’s agenda. He praised the governor’s wife, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda, for sponsoring 20 students in the college and awarding three computers to the top three graduating students.

The governor’s administration has made significant strides in improving the education sector, including emerging as the best-performing state in the entire North and the second-best in the whole country in the NECO entrance examination for gifted students.
