Afrobeats Singer Omah Lay Opens Up About Major Challenges in the Music Industry
Afrobeats sensation Omah Lay has shared his struggles in the music industry, revealing that he doesn’t feel loved by the media and industry gatekeepers. In an exclusive interview with Amazon Music, the ‘Boy Alone’ crooner opened up about his personal challenges and the difficulties he faces as a Nigerian artist traveling with a Nigerian passport.
According to Omah Lay, he often feels unloved by those who claim to be gatekeepers of the music industry. “I have my fans, family, and team, but I don’t feel loved especially by the media and the people that call themselves the gatekeepers,” he said. The artist revealed that he escapes the “sad reality” by living in a fantasy world most of the time, adding, “This is something I’ve never talked about. I’m that artist that lives in a fantasy world. I just live in my head 90 per cent of the time.”
The ‘Bad Influence’ singer also spoke about the challenges he faces while traveling with a Nigerian passport. “Travelling, especially being a Nigerian and having the Nigerian passport, I have just seen the cruelty of the world so much,” he said. “The immigration officers often maltreat me once they see the Nigerian passport until they realise that I’m Omah Lay, that’s when the treatment changes.”
Omah Lay’s candid comments provide a glimpse into the struggles faced by many artists in the music industry. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding, not just for artists, but for all individuals who face challenges and adversity.
