A Tribute to Late Malam Wada Maida, a Media Icon

To My Chairman, Late Malam Wada Maida

I am writing to pay tribute to an extraordinary individual, Late Malam Wada Maida, who left an indelible mark on the media landscape. Although I am struggling to find the right words to express my emotions, I am compelled to share my thoughts and experiences with you, dear readers.

As the Managing Director/CEO of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), I am fortunate to have had the privilege of working with many outstanding individuals, but none quite like Malam Wada. His passing on August 17th, 2020, has left a huge vacuum in our lives, and I am still coming to terms with the loss.

Malam Wada was a towering figure in the media industry, with an illustrious career spanning over three decades. He was a pioneer staff of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), serving as London Bureau Chief, Editor-in-Chief, Managing Director, and finally, Chairman of the Board of Peoples Daily. His media trajectory was truly inspirational, and his contributions to the growth of NAN and the media in general are immeasurable.

Throughout his life, Malam Wada was guided by the Quranic verse, “Every soul will taste death” (3:185). He chose the flavor of tolerance and patience, and his patience and prayer were a constant reminder to those around him. In the nearly 30 years I had the pleasure of knowing him, I have seen him demonstrate extraordinary mild manneredness and a disarming disposition.

As my chairman at Peoples Daily, he was a father figure to many of us. I recall how he would nudge me in the right direction, always placing the interests of the organization above personal biases. His leadership style was unparalleled, and his ability to recruit staff without godfathers, solely on their competencies, was a testament to his vision and commitment to excellence.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Malam Wada’s character was his humility. He never sought to draw attention to himself, and his reprimands or corrections were always delivered with kindness and consideration. I have worked with several high-flying media leaders across five newsrooms nationwide, but none came close to him in putting a leash on their emotions.

As I reflect on his life, I am reminded of the profound lesson he taught me and many others about humility, kindness, and mentorship. He was the very definition of tolerance and a profound lesson in humility and kindness. May his soul continue to nestle in jannah.

Insha’Allah, I hope to keep him abreast of the latest updates from NAN next year, if I haven’t answered the call. Adieu, my chairman, till we meet again.

Mr. Ali is the Managing Director/CEO of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
