Minister of Power Accuses Cabals and Cartels of Sabotaging Power Sector Reforms

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has spoken out against the saboteurs and cartels believed to be behind the recent attacks on the country’s power transmission substations and lines. During an interview on Fresh FM Ibadan, the minister revealed that he has received numerous threats from unknown individuals opposed to the ongoing reforms in the power sector.

“We are all Nigerians, but we are all Nigerians,” Mr. Adelabu said. “We will not run away from ourselves.” The minister, who is the 49th person to hold the position, emphasized that his government will not be intimidated by the opposition to the reforms.

The minister accused the saboteurs and cartels of being behind the bombing of transmission substations with dynamite and the pulling down of power lines. He argued that such acts do not require ordinary individuals to accomplish and are instead organized crimes.

The minister’s reforms have resulted in a significant increase in electricity generating capacity, from 4,000 megawatts (MW) to 5,155 MW. This achievement surpasses the country’s previous 25-year achievement of 2,000 MW.

Under the minister’s leadership, the government has targeted increasing the electricity generating capacity to 6,000 MW by the end of the year, with the support of the federal government. When the minister took office, the electricity generated was 4,000 MW, but within a year, over 1,000 MW has been added.

Mr. Adelabu expressed confidence that the government will overcome the obstacles posed by the saboteurs and achieve its goal of increasing electricity generating capacity.
