Raheem Sterling Seeks Clarity on His Future at Chelsea
British winger Raheem Sterling is seeking answers about his future at Chelsea, after being left out of the team’s squad for their season opener on Sunday, August 18.
Sterling’s representatives released a statement just before kick-off, asking for clarity on the 29-year-old’s situation. The question was directed at Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, who was asked if Sterling would play for the club when the transfer window closes.
Maresca’s response was ambiguous, saying, “I don’t know. The only thing I can say is that it was a technical decision (not to play Sterling) and in the next day, probably we will want to sit and clarify the situation but it is nothing more than that.”
When pressed further, Maresca emphasized that all Chelsea players are still part of the team, but acknowledged that not everyone can stay. “I want Raheem Sterling, but I want all the 30 players we have. But there is no space for all of them. So for some of them, they have to leave,” he said.
Chelsea’s squad currently consists of 42 players, leaving several players vying for a spot. Sterling joined the club from Manchester City in 2022 and has made 81 appearances, scoring 19 goals.
The uncertainty surrounding Sterling’s future at Chelsea is likely to continue, with the transfer window still open.
