US Republicans Launch Impeachment Bid Against President Joe Biden
In a move unlikely to gain significant traction, Congressional Republicans have lodged a formal case for the impeachment of US President Joe Biden, citing corruption linked to his son Hunter’s foreign business affairs. The report, released on the opening day of the Democratic National Convention, accuses Biden of abusing his public office for private financial gain.
According to Jim Jordan, head of the Judiciary committee, the probe has conclusively shown that Biden used his office to benefit his family and business associates. However, Republicans have failed to provide direct proof of Biden’s involvement in his son’s businesses or using his office to benefit him.
The report is built around inferences and innuendo, with many of the accusations related to the period when Biden was out of office, after serving as Vice President under Barack Obama. Biden has repeatedly denied helping his son’s business ventures, including in Ukraine and China.
The impeachment bid is seen by many as a bid for revenge over the two impeachments of Republican Donald Trump when he was President. However, Republicans hold only a razor-thin majority in the House and would require near-unanimity to overcome Democratic opposition. If the House were to impeach Biden, the Democratic-controlled Senate would be sure to acquit the President.
The move comes as Biden is set to deliver a swan song speech at the Democratic convention and pass the political torch to his Vice President, Kamala Harris. Republicans have for years used Hunter Biden’s foreign links and chaotic personal life as a recovering drug addict to try and embarrass the President.
Despite the lack of concrete evidence, the impeachment bid is likely to be a contentious issue in the coming weeks and months.
