INEC to Distribute PVCs to Newly Registered Voters in Edo State

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will begin distributing Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to newly registered voters in Edo State from August 22 to August 26. This comes ahead of the governorship election in the state, scheduled for September 21, 2024.

According to a statement released by the commission, registered voters can collect their PVCs at any of the 192 Wards in Edo State during this period, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, including weekends. After August 26, the collection process will move to INEC’s local government offices across the state, where voters can collect their PVCs from August 28 to September 8, 2024.

The PVC distribution is part of INEC’s preparation for the governorship election in Edo State, where a total of 184,438 voters were registered during the recent Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise. The figure includes 119,206 new registrations, 8,847 inter-state transfers, and 46,171 intra-state transfers.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed that all newly printed PVCs have been delivered to INEC’s office in Benin City and are now available for collection. He emphasized that the commission’s policy that PVCs must be personally collected by registered voters has not changed, and that cards will not be distributed or collected by proxy.

To facilitate the collection process, INEC has developed a register containing the names and photographs of the 184,438 voters. The register has been uploaded to the commission’s website, allowing voters to easily identify and collect their PVCs.

Yakubu also announced that the softcopy of the final and comprehensive register of voters will be presented to each political party fielding candidates in the election on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, in Benin City.

INEC is working on the schedule for the collection of PVCs in Ondo State, where the governorship election is scheduled to hold in November this year. The commission assured the electorate in Ondo State that action is being taken to ensure the availability of their PVCs for the election.
