Adamawa State Governor Approves ₦70,000 National Minimum Wage for Workers
In a significant move, the Governor of Adamawa state, Umaru Fintiri, has approved the payment of ₦70,000 national minimum wage to workers on the state and local government payroll. This decision was revealed by the State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Emmanuel Fashe, in an interview with newsmen shortly after a closed-door meeting with the governor on Tuesday.
According to Fashe, state government workers will start receiving their salaries with the new minimum wage from August 2024, while their counterparts at the local government level will benefit from September. The implementation of the new minimum wage will be based on the consequential adjustment table used in 2019, pending the release of the table from the National Salaries, Wages and Income Commission.
Fashe explained that the new minimum wage will be calculated based on the current national minimum wage of N32,000, which applies to Adamawa State. “Whatever the worker was getting as present national minimum wage of N32,000 as it applies to Adamawa State, that same will be applied in terms of percentages in implementation of the new minimum wage,” he said.
The governor’s commitment to the welfare of workers was also highlighted by Fashe, who noted that the implementation of the new minimum wage was undertaken even before the release of the table from the national salaries, wages and income commission. This move is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of workers in Adamawa state and their families.
The approval of the ₦70,000 national minimum wage is a significant development in the state, and it is expected to improve the standard of living of workers in Adamawa state.
