Biden Steeps Aside, Backs Kamala Harris for Democratic Presidential Bid
President Joe Biden, 81, addressed the Democratic National Convention on its opening night, urging party members to support Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid to become the party’s nominee in the 2024 US presidential election. Despite stepping aside and facing pressure from some in his party to drop out of the race, Biden expressed gratitude to the crowd, stating, “I made a lot of mistakes in my career, but I gave my best to you.”
In a strong and energetic performance, Biden acknowledged the recent mid-campaign switch that led to his decision to prioritize Harris as his successor. He credited Harris, saying, “She’s tough, she’s experienced, and she has enormous integrity. Her story represents the best American story.”
Biden also praised Harris for her unique experience, saying, “She was also vice president, like many of our best presidents.” This nod to his own career served as a testament to the values he hopes Harris will bring to the presidential race.
The President’s passionate address received a standing ovation lasting more than four minutes, with chants of “Thank you, Joe” filling the hall. Harris was visibly moved by the ovation, replying with an emotional “America, I love you.”
As the night came to a close, Biden made it clear that he did not harbor any ill will regarding the end of his tenure and called on the party to unite around Harris in her bid to face Republican candidate Donald Trump. This decision marked an unprecedented mid-campaign switch for a sitting President, a move many in the Democratic Party hope will energize their bid to secure the White House in the upcoming election.
