World’s Oldest Living Person Passes Away at 117

The world has bid farewell to Maria Branyas Morera, who was recognized as the world’s oldest living person by Guinness World Records. Born in the United States, Branyas lived through two world wars before passing away at the age of 117, her family announced on social network X.

According to her family, Branyas died as she wished, peacefully in her sleep, without pain. They will always remember her for her kindness and advice. In her final post, Branyas, who had lived in the Santa Maria del Tura nursing home in Olot, Spain, for the past two decades, revealed that she felt weak, but reassured her loved ones that she would be happy wherever she went.

Guinness World Records confirmed Branyas’s status as the world’s oldest person in January 2023 after the death of French nun Lucile Randon, who was 118 years old. With Branyas’s passing, Tomiko Itooka of Japan takes over as the oldest living person, born on May 23, 1908, and aged 116 years old.
