Emir of Kano Defends PhD Thesis with Flawless Record
Muhammadu Sanusi II, the emir of Kano, has made headlines with his impressive achievement of successfully defending his PhD thesis from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London.
The thesis, titled “Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform: A Case Study of the Emirate of Kano and Comparison with the Kingdom of Morocco,” was defended by Mr Sanusi on Wednesday.
The esteemed examiners, Professor Ziba Mir-Hosseini, Professorial Associate at SOAS’ Centre of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law (CIMEL), and Dr Dawoud El-Alami, formerly of the University of Oxford and the University of Wales, Lampeter, praised Mr Sanusi’s work, citing his erudite scholarship and excellent thesis.
The message announcing Mr Sanusi’s achievement, sent to his colleagues by his supervisor, Mashood, states that the thesis has made an original contribution to knowledge in the field. He passed his defence without any corrections.
The viva, or PhD defence, was chaired by Professor Martin Lau, with gratitude expressed to the examiners and chair for their valuable insights. Professor Lynn Welchman, Mr Sanusi’s second supervisor, was also thanked for her substantial role in the supervision process.
