Nigeria’s Livestock Sector Boosted with Heavy Investment from World Bank, Federal Government, and Kogi State Government

Lagos, Nigeria – The Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, His Majesty Ahmed Tijani Anaje, has commended the World Bank, Federal Government, and Kogi State Government for their significant investment in the livestock sector, which he believes will generate enormous income for Nigerians.

The royal father made this statement when staff and management of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (KOGI L-PRES), led by state project coordinator Dr Olufemi Bolarin, visited the palace of Ohinoyi of Ebiraland in Okene as part of stakeholder engagement with traditional rulers in the central senatorial district of the state.

Crops and livestock farming have been a trademark of the Ebira ethnic group, and the monarch believes that the massive investment in the livestock sector in Kogi State will undoubtedly change the lives of rural dwellers for the better. He charged the beneficiaries of the programme to use the input provided to expand their livestock farming, generate income, and become employers of labour in the near future.

Dr Olufemi Bolarin, state project coordinator of KOGI L-PRES, disclosed that the process of establishing a multi-million naira livestock service centre has commenced at Confluence University of Science and Technology Osara. The centre, when approved and fully executed, will serve as a training ground for animal scientists and boost livestock production and marketing in Kogi State.

According to Dr Bolarin, L-PRES will offer day-old chicks, feeds, drugs, and vaccines to beneficiaries of broiler production, while those in egg production will receive Point of Lay, feeds, and drugs. Beneficiaries in marketing and processing will also receive preservation equipment, generator sets, stabilizers, table-size broiler birds, and packaging bags.

Kogi is the only state that has carried out such an intervention aimed at uplifting livestock farming in rural areas, said Dr Bolarin. The state project coordinator expressed gratitude for the royal blessing and permission to commence the distribution of inputs to 500 women and youth poultry farmers’ beneficiaries across Kogi State.

The traditional institutions in the central senatorial district have pledged their support to enable the project to succeed and benefit the people.
