Nicki Minaj Sparks Controversy with Remarks on Rappers Signing to White-Owned Labels

Rapper Nicki Minaj has never been one to hold her tongue, and her latest rant has left fans buzzing. The 41-year-old took to social media to blast rappers who have signed to white-owned record labels, opting instead for her own label, Heavy On It.

In a series of statements, Minaj expressed her frustration with artists who prefer to sign with labels that she believes are not as financially stable or influential as Heavy On It. “Motherf**ker tell somebody they don’t want to sign with Heavy On It,” she said. “But then they’ll go and sign with the white peoples. And guess who the white peoples finna call? They always get the attention of the Barbz.”

Many fans believe Minaj’s statement was directed at Ice Spice, who was rumored to have signed with Heavy On It after collaborating on the “Princess Diana” remix and “Barbie World” in 2023. However, it was later revealed that Ice Spice was actually signed to 10K Projects, a label under Warner Music Group.

The Queens rapper also revealed that she will only allow her signees to benefit from her name and platform moving forward. “You will be surprised,” she said. “And I’m not talking about doing ad-libs on any songs. If your name is not on Pink Friday 2, they’re not a Heavy On It artist.” The forthcoming new version of her December 2023 album will be a Heavy On It exclusive affair.

The controversy has led to a string of unfollows on Instagram, with Minaj removing both Ice Spice and JT from her list of followers. The tension between the “Barbie World” duo has been discussed for months, especially after the Bronx rapper’s former friend leaked text messages of her calling Minaj “ungrateful and delusional.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Ice Spice addressed her relationship with Minaj, saying “We don’t have the closest relationship, you know? But we’re definitely good. We’re mutuals. We had smash records together. I love us together. I think the world does too.” She claimed that she sent the text messages out of frustration and her former friend took advantage of a situation when she was vulnerable.

As for JT, things appeared to be peachy between them. Minaj brought out the City Girls member during her Pink Friday 2 tour stop in Boston in April, and she previously appeared on the “Queen Mix” of her 2022 hit “Super Freaky Girl.” Seemingly, their positive relationship status appears to be no more.
