Labour Party Denies Alliance with APC, Accuses Opposition of Smear Campaign
In a statement released on Thursday, the Edo State chapter of the Labour Party has denied a trending online publication claiming that it is in alliance with the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the September 21 governorship election in Edo State. The statement, signed by the LP Publicity Secretary in Edo, Sam Uruopa, described the report as baseless and a desperate attempt to distract the party’s governorship candidate, Olu Akpata.
According to Uruopa, the Labour Party has consistently maintained its commitment to its ideals and would never consider any alliance with either the APC or the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He explained that both parties have for the past 25 years “represented darkness in Nigeria and Edo State,” and that Akpata, as a light, has nothing in common with them.
The statement further denied receiving any sponsorship from the APC or the Presidency, stating that Akpata’s campaign is self-funded with the backing of loyal party members and supporters. Uruopa also denied receiving $850,000 or N1.6bn from the Presidency or APC, describing the campaign finances as transparent and accountable.
The Labour Party also denied allegations of manipulating delegates during the party’s primaries, stating that they conducted the freest and fairest primaries devoid of any godfather interference, where Akpata emerged as the clear winner.
The party urged its members, the Obidient family, and the general public to disregard the malicious allegations sponsored by the opposition and focus on the issues that matter. Akpata remains committed to his promise of a better Edo State for all, and the party will not be distracted by baseless rumors and smear campaigns.
The controversy surrounding the Labour Party’s governorship candidate, Olu Akpata, has sparked heated debates and discussions in Edo State ahead of the September 21 governorship election. The Labour Party has maintained that Akpata is the best candidate to lead the state, citing his commitment to the party’s ideals and his ability to bring about positive change to the state.
