Kamala Harris Joins Twitch, Streaming Live to Reach Younger Voters

Kamala Harris Joins Twitch as Campaign Reaches Out to Younger Voters

In a bold move to connect with a younger audience, Vice President Kamala Harris has launched her own channel on Twitch, a popular live streaming platform. The account, with the handle “kamalaharris,” streamed her speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Thursday night, marking the latest milestone in her digital strategy.

According to reports, the Harris campaign team has already posted featured clips on the new channel, which currently has around 6.6K followers. Compared to her opponent, Donald Trump, who has 174K followers on Twitch, the account is still in its early stages.

The move to Twitch follows Harris’ official debut on TikTok earlier this month. Wired reports that the Harris-Walz campaign has allocated 175 staffers to handle digital strategy, content creation, and online advertising. The Democratic National Committee has also reached out to social media influencers, inviting over 200 creators to cover the event alongside journalists for the first time.

Gen Z Voters Hold the Key to Victory

With the 2024 presidential election just around the corner, the campaign’s focus on Gen Z and millennial voters is crucial. Mashable reports that NBC exit polls from the 2020 election suggest that 65 percent of voters aged 18-24, mainly Gen Zers, backed President Joe Biden. Since then, Biden’s efforts to win over Gen Z and millennials have been met with limited success.

Meanwhile, Trump’s presence on TikTok and other social media platforms has been consistently high. His X (formerly Twitter) account boasts over 89.9 million followers, while his Instagram following stands at 26.3 million. On YouTube, his channel has over 3.1 million subscribers.

Harris’ Twitch presence is part of her effort to match Trump’s online clout, using platforms like Twitch, TikTok, and X to reach a younger, more diverse audience. Her campaign on X has gained traction, with over 20.8 million followers.

As the election approaches, it’s becoming increasingly clear that online presence matters. Harris’ move onto Twitch marks an important milestone in her digital strategy, showcasing her commitment to reaching out to younger voters.
