Nigeria’s New Chief Justice: Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun Takes Office
Abuja, Nigeria – In a ceremony held at the State House in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu administered the oath of office to Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). The event marked a significant milestone in the country’s judicial history, with Justice Kekere-Ekun becoming the second Nigerian female jurist to hold the position.
Justice Kekere-Ekun will operate in an acting capacity until her confirmation by the Senate. She took her oaths at 11:38 am and assumed her rightful sitting position beside the President at 11:45 am. The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including other Justices of the Supreme Court, the President of the Senate, and the Governor of Lagos State.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment follows the retirement of her predecessor, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, and her nomination by the National Judicial Council (NJC) on August 15, 2024. Her new role as CJN is a testament to her dedication and expertise in the legal profession.
The event was witnessed by a range of dignitaries, including the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the leadership of the House of Representatives, and the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwoolu. Other notable attendees included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
