Imo Governorship Election: Supreme Court Affirms Hope Uzodimma’s Re-election
In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has reaffirmed the re-election of Hope Uzodimma as the governor of Imo State. The apex court’s five-member panel, led by Justice Mohammed Idris, dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Samuel Anyanwu, citing lack of merit.
The PDP and Anyanwu had contested the November 11, 2023 governorship election, alleging that the poll was invalid due to non-compliance with the Electoral Act and that Uzodimma’s West African Examination Certificate (WAEC) result was forged. However, the court found that the appellants failed to prove their claims, as required by law.
The Supreme Court also dismissed the appeal filed by the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Athan Achonu, as well as that of the Allied Peoples Movement, on similar grounds. The court held that the appeals lacked merit, having failed to prove the allegations of non-compliance and forged certificates.
This decision marks a significant victory for Uzodimma and his All Progressives Congress (APC), as it affirms the validity of the election and his right to continue serving as the governor of Imo State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Court of Appeal, Abuja had dismissed the appeal filed by the PDP and Anyanwu on July 16, upholding the decision of the Imo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which had affirmed Uzodimma’s election as the authentic governor of the state.
The three-member panel led by Justice Bitrus Sanga held that the appeal lacked merit, having resolved all issues formulated against the appellants in the suit.
