Nigerian Powerhouse Edo Queens Win 2024 WAFU CAF Women’s Champions League Title
Lagos, Nigeria – Edo Queens made history on Friday, emerging as the champions of the 2024 WAFU CAF Women’s Champions League with a convincing 3-0 victory over Ainonvi FC from Benin Republic in the final match.
The Nigerian champions struggled to break down their opponent early in the game, but eventually found their rhythm, thanks to a fine finish from captain Suliat Abideen, which gave them a 1-0 lead at the half-time break. The second half saw enterprising forward Emem Essien double Edo Queens’ lead on the hour mark.
Ainonvi FC’s hopes of a comeback were dashed when Elizabeth Ukandu scored an own goal 14 minutes from time, sealing the win for Edo Queens and securing their place in the CAF Women’s Champions League as a reward for winning the regional title.
Edo Queens have made history by becoming the first Nigerian club to win five consecutive matches on the continent, and the second Nigerian club to win the competition after Bayelsa Queens in 2022. This outstanding achievement is a testament to the team’s determination, skill, and hard work.
The Benin City club will now represent Nigeria in the CAF Women’s Champions League, a prestigious competition that brings together the best women’s football clubs from across the continent.
