Bayelsa Governor Elect Douye Diri Secures Supreme Court Victory

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its weight behind Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, after the Supreme Court upheld his victory in the 2023 governorship election. The court’s five-member panel unanimously rejected the appeal by All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Timipre Sylva, challenging the outcome of the election.

In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP hailed the court’s decision as a significant win for democracy, rule of law, and the people’s will. The party also highlighted Senator Diri’s re-election, saying it was a testament to the recognition and appreciation of his outstanding achievements in providing life-changing citizen empowerment programmes and projects in the state.

However, the PDP expressed concerns about the validation of the governorship elections in Imo and Kogi States, citing allegations of flawed processes and disregard for electoral guidelines. The party stated that the confirmation of the elections despite widespread irregularities and violence raises serious issues and underscores the need for a comprehensive review of electoral laws.

The PDP reiterated its position that no candidate should be declared a winner of an election until all legal processes are concluded, to prevent electoral manipulation and violence. The party urged calm but determination among Nigerians to ensure the entrenchment of credible elections in the country.

The Supreme Court’s verdict has sparked mixed reactions across Nigeria, with some calling for calm while others have expressed disappointment and distrust in the electoral process. The situation further highlights the need for electoral reforms to strengthen democracy and ensure free and fair elections.
