Manchester United Forward Line Under Fire: Strachan Blasts ‘Trotting’ Attack
Gordon Strachan, a former Manchester United midfielder, has voiced his concerns over the club’s attack, claiming that their forwards are “trotting about” on the pitch of play. Strachan drew comparisons between United’s attack and Paris Saint-Germain’s former attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe, citing the French side’s lack of Champions League success.
Speaking on Lord Ping (via GOAL), Strachan highlighted the work ethic of teams like Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal, whose forwards work tirelessly to press and harass the opponent, forcing them into mistakes. He lamented that Manchester United’s forward players have not adopted this approach under manager Erik ten Hag, saying it “worries” him.
Strachan’s criticism comes after United bolstered their attack by signing Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee, adding to the likes of Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Bruno Fernandes.
When discussing PSG’s attack, Strachan recalled how Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe would “trot about” on the pitch without much defensive pressure, resulting in the team’s inability to win the Champions League. He fears that United’s current front three, made up of these five players, may be suffering from a similar problem.
Strachan’s comments may spark controversy among United fans, who are eager to see their team succeed under ten Hag’s leadership. However, the former midfielder’s observations may prompt the coaching staff to reassess their approach to attack, potentially leading to improved results.
As the Premier League season heats up, Manchester United fans will be keeping a close eye on their team’s performances, hoping that Strachan’s words will lead to a shift in the team’s style of play and a more effective attack.
