Tunisian President Kais Saied Announces Major Cabinet Overhaul Ahead of Presidential Election

Tunisian President Kais Saied has announced a significant cabinet reshuffle, appointing 19 new ministers, including those responsible for defense, foreign affairs, and the economy, in a move aimed at boosting support ahead of the presidential election on October 6.

According to a statement from the presidency, Khaled Shili will now serve as the defense minister, while Mohamed Ali Nafti takes over as foreign affairs minister. The changes come after Saied dismissed Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani earlier this month and replaced him with Kamel Maddouri, who previously held the position of social affairs minister.

However, not all ministers have been replaced. Those overseeing finance, justice, and the interior have retained their roles. The cabinet overhaul is seen as a bid to introduce new leadership and improve public perception ahead of the election.

The move comes amid a financial crisis and growing public dissatisfaction due to ongoing water and electricity disruptions and shortages of essential goods and medicines. The crisis has led to widespread protests and criticism of the government’s handling of the situation.

Saied, who solidified his authority in 2021 by dissolving the elected parliament, is running for re-election against two opponents. However, opposition parties and human rights organizations have accused the government of imposing “arbitrary restrictions” and using intimidation to limit competition, potentially paving the way for Saied’s re-election.

The cabinet reshuffle is a key development in the lead-up to the election, and its impact on Tunisia’s political landscape remains to be seen. With the country facing significant challenges, including a financial crisis and public dissatisfaction, the new cabinet will be under intense scrutiny to deliver results and improve the lives of Tunisians.
