Xiaomi Joins Huawei and Samsung in Developing Tri-Fold Smartphone
Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has reportedly joined the growing list of companies developing tri-fold smartphones, according to a tipster on social media. This development comes as no surprise, given the increasing popularity of foldable devices and the competition among tech companies to innovate and stay ahead in the market.
According to the tipster, Smart Pikachu, Xiaomi’s tri-fold smartphone would have three distinct sections that can be unfolded to reveal a large display, similar to a tablet. When folded, the device would have a candy bar form factor, albeit with more thickness due to the three internal screens. It is suggested that the handset could make its debut at technology showcases, such as the Mobile World Congress 2025, which is scheduled to take place in February next year.
Xiaomi’s foray into tri-fold smartphones follows the launch of its first-ever flip-style smartphone, the Xiaomi Mix Flip, on July 19. The company’s move is seen as a response to the growing demand for innovative and futuristic devices that can offer a unique user experience.
In comparison, Huawei’s purported tri-fold smartphone has already been spotted in public several times. As the name suggests, it would have three screens attached via a dual-hinge system, with two of them folding inwards and the other outwards. The inner display is speculated to be 10 inches in size, with a hole-punch cutout for the front camera located on the left-most screen. It is reported to be powered by a Kirin 9 series chipset, with Kirin 9010 being considered as one of the options. Another report suggests that it could be unveiled as early as September this year.
The competition among tech companies to develop tri-fold smartphones is heating up, with Samsung also reportedly working on a similar device. As the market for foldable devices continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how these companies innovate and differentiate themselves from one another.
