WHO Seeks $87.4 Million to Combat Mpox Outbreak
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has launched an urgent appeal for $87.4 million to combat the ongoing Mpox outbreak, which has been declared a global emergency. The funding will be used to support the implementation of a comprehensive global response plan, spanning six months from September 2024 to February 2025.
According to WHO, the Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan (SPRP) outlines critical activities aimed at containing the outbreak, including surveillance, research, equitable access to medical countermeasures, and community empowerment. The organization emphasized the importance of these measures in preventing further spread and protecting those at risk.
The required funding will be allocated across WHO headquarters, regional, and country offices to enable coordination of responses, provide technical assistance, run operations, and deliver medical supplies. WHO has called on donors to urgently provide the necessary support to prevent further spread of the outbreak and protect vulnerable populations.
The Mpox outbreak has been declared a global emergency by WHO, highlighting the need for immediate action to contain the spread of the virus. With the global response plan in place, WHO is urging donors to provide the necessary funding to support the efforts of healthcare workers, researchers, and communities affected by the outbreak.
The world is watching closely as WHO works to contain the Mpox outbreak, and the organization’s appeal for funding is a critical step towards achieving this goal.
