Nigeria to Host Prestigious Data Protection Conference, Emphasizing Positive Image
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has underscored the importance of highlighting the country’s positive image, as the Federal Government prepares to host the 10th edition of the Network of African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA-RADPA) Conference and Annual General Meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, in May 2025.
The conference, which will bring together data protection authorities from across Africa, will provide a crucial platform for Nigeria to showcase its positive image as a peaceful, safe, and attractive investment destination. According to Dr. Vincent Olatunji, Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of NDPC, the event is not just about the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE) or the NDPC, but about Nigeria.
The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the conference comprises representatives from various sectors, including the FMCIDE, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST), Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the World Bank, and several technology giants such as Meta, Google, AWS, Microsoft, and MasterCard.
Dr. Olatunji emphasized the significance of the conference, describing it as the largest event in Africa’s data protection and privacy ecosystem. He urged committee members to work collaboratively and exchange ideas to bring the world to Nigeria and ensure the success of the event.
The NDPC’s hosting of the NADPA-RADPA conference is a testament to the commission’s traction within a short period of establishment and Nigeria’s commitment to data protection and digital innovation on the global stage. Despite being a relatively new player in the data protection and privacy ecosystem, Nigeria has already made significant strides, even at the global level.
The Network of African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA-RADPA) was established in Ouagadougou in September 2016 and consists of 23 Data Protection Authorities and others with observer status from across Africa. Its primary objective is to provide a platform for exchanges and cooperation among its members while amplifying Africa’s voice in global partnerships.
