PDP Flags Off Edo Governorship Campaign with Promises of Continued Reforms

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially launched its campaign for the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, with State Governor Godwin Obaseki and party leaders calling on Edo people to vote for the party’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, to sustain the reforms implemented over the past eight years.

The campaign was flagged off at the Ubiaja Township Stadium in Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area, where Obaseki, his wife, Mrs. Betsy, former Edo State Deputy Governor Chief Mike Ogiadome, and PDP chieftain Chief Tom Ikimi, among others, converged to kick-start the campaign.

Speaking at the event, Obaseki stressed the importance of electing a credible candidate like Ighodalo, saying, "Asue Ighodalo is a man who knows what to do. The people need a credible candidate like him. We will be handing over to a winning team. Asue Ighodalo is coming to serve the people of Edo State. He is not looking for money, fame or fortune but to serve because of the love he has for Edo people. Ogie, his deputy, is a trustworthy person and together they will move the State forward."

Ighodalo, the PDP governorship candidate, also called on Edo people to vote massively for him, promising to continue with the developmental strides of the Obaseki-led administration. He assured that his government would work to reduce hardship, improve security, create employment opportunities, and reduce criminal activities in the State.

The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, urged voters to mobilize massively for the PDP and its candidate to ensure victory in the upcoming election.

In a surprising move, Chief Francis Inegbeneki, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defected to the PDP, citing lack of credibility and competence in the APC’s governorship candidate, Monday Okpebholo.

The Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, also spoke at the event, praising the Obaseki-led administration for its achievements and expressing her support for Ighodalo as the next governor of the State.

For his part, Chief Mike Ogiadome, a former Edo State Deputy Governor and Chief of Staff to former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, endorsed Ighodalo as the best candidate in the election.

The campaign launch marks the beginning of a robust campaign season in Edo State, with the PDP seeking to build on its achievements over the past eight years and retain power in the State.
